Identifying, Developing & Retaining Minority Talent

Recruiting and retaining top talent, and the development of younger lawyers is a growing concern for firms and law departments. Extending this discussion to cover the untapped minority pool is a branch of this topic that needs the spotlight. This session will explore the top intervention methods used by many firms today: diversity progress metrics to hold managers accountable for change, and training programs to address preconceived attitudes and behaviors. This panel will also dive into the channels that can help an organization’s diversity efforts, including creation or membership of formal networks, mentoring and work-life support programs.

Overcoming Blind Spots & Unconscious Bias to Create a Culture of Inclusion

Unconscious bias plagues many professions here in the U.S. and globally, but the legal industry is one area where bias is quite pervasive. A sense of social responsibility among lawyers is growing in the wake of Trump’s proposed executive orders, making exposure of blind spots within the legal office a more common occurrence. During this session the speakers will explore the four types of bias and the strategies needed to overcome the mental shortcuts and assumptions people too often make in the legal industry. You will hear examples of bias-breaking activities your office or department can utilize.
